Sticklen Grabs First Win in Sprint Challenge

Nov 16, 2022

It was a rapid two-day weekend for TekworkX Motorsport at the Bathurst International, contesting six races across two categories in just two days.

Zoe Woods tackled the Australian Production Cars, with Max Vidau completing a handful of laps in practice and qualifying. In Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge it was a three car attack from Danny Stutterd and Sam Fillmore in Pro-Am and Nathan Sticklen in Class B. The short schedule saw both categories contest a single practice session, qualifying and race one on Friday. Sticklen and Woods both making their debuts at Mount Panorama, faced with a steep learning curve.

Woods and Vidau both drove in practice and qualifying for Production Cars, taking third in Class C in both sessions. Stutterd earned second on the grid in Pro-Am with Fillmore fifth and in Class B Sticklen put himself third on the grid.

Race one was a somewhat wet affair with rain in the air and a slippery racetrack, despite this Sticklen turned up and won in his first race on the mountain. In Pro-Am Stutterd also recorded a podium in third place with Fillmore in seventh. Woods picked up a second-place finish with a measured drive after losing some early ground.

Saturday saw two more races for both categories to cap off a busy couple of days. Race two for Production Cars ran entirely under the Safety Car, meaning Woods finished where she started in second. In Sprint Challenge Stutterd was battling for the Pro-Am win before coming home in second while Fillmore worked his way forward to finish in fifth. Sticklen was extremely unlucky to miss out on another race win on the final lap, finishing in second place.

Woods’ final race for the weekend saw her finish in third place for Class C amid some big battling in the massive 45 car field. The final Sprint Challenge race of the weekend was a wild affair, with Stutterd in the thick of the action and Fillmore fighting up the front, unfortunately both ran into trouble which cost them a strong finish. Sticklen earned himself another second-place finish in Class B and fell just one point shy of taking the overall round win.

“It’s the best feeling ever going to Bathurst for the first time, being coached by a Bathurst 1000 winner, in the rain, and coming out with my first race win. It’s just epic,” said Sticklen.

“The journey this year has been bittersweet at times, the rough start at SMP and then to my first race at Queensland Raceway before we got hit at Sandown and then again in Tailem Bend it knocked some confidence out of me. Then of course knowing Bathurst was next was pretty daunting.

“The advice I got from everyone leading into Bathurst was to just complete every lap of every session without getting in to trouble and that’s what I did. There wasn’t a single incident for me all weekend. I am coming away from this weekend absolutely full of confidence.”

The weekend marked the final round of the Australian Production Car season, while Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge will wrap up in two weeks at Phillip Island.
