Debut T86 Weekend Complete for Freestone and Woods

Apr 20, 2023

Jordan Freestone and Zoe Woods have completed their debut weekends in the Toyota 86 Scholarship Series.

Held at Sydney Motorsport Park, as part of the NSW State Championship event, the opening round consisted of three races following Saturday morning qualifying and Friday practice.

Freestone qualified in 15th place with Woods in 25th. The field was incredibly close, with only a second covering the top 16 cars. In race one Freestone crossed the line in 17th, after a series of aggressive battles through the midfield. Woods unfortunately picked up an ABS fault on her #210 which hampered her race.

In race two Freestone again finished in 17th place, putting more focus into his race craft in a bid to maintain his position. Woods enjoyed a good battle as well, rising up three spots and claiming 25th on the final lap.

The weekend ended with an interrupted final race, with a red flag and Safety Car period. Freestone and Woods both kept their cars clean in the wild final race and set quick lap times in the closing laps once racing resumed. Freestone finished in 18th with Woods up to 22nd.

Round two of the Toyota 86 Scholarship Series takes place at Phillip Island from May 26-28. Both Freestone and Woods are inside the cut-off point to gain qualification to the National Series, with Freestone equal 13th in points and Woods in 22nd.

“I was a bit nervous around that first race and I was blown away by how intense the racing was, which cost me some ground,” said Freestone.

“Max (Vidau) and Cameron (Crick) were both excellent in coaching me through the weekend. Comparing race three to the first one, there was a massive improvement in my confidence, and I was able to battle for position much more comfortably.

“It was a good experience to build on for the next two scholarship rounds, as we keep our eyes on preparing for the national series to kick off in July,” concluded Freestone.

Zoe Woods
“Overall I’m reasonably happy with how the weekend played out,” said Woods.

“I had a little moment on Friday which set me back a bit with my confidence, but the team did a fantastic job in helping me to regain that over the rest of the weekend. The car was great, and we showed that with some good battles and some representative lap times.

“I’m excited to get to Phillip Island, which will be a new track for me,” concluded Woods.
