Morris and Fitzsimmons Deliver TekworkX Sweep at QR

Aug 14, 2023

For the second time in as many rounds, TekworkX Motorsport have swept the weekend in Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge and earned a commanding one-two result for the round.

Nash Morris backed up from his sensational debut to win all three races at his and the team’s home track of Queensland Raceway. Teenager Hamish Fitzsimmons had a breakout weekend, twice finishing second to Morris to earn his first round podium. Aron Shields continued to close the gap to the series lead, with finishes of sixth, fifth and fifth again in race three.

In qualifying Morris dramatically missed out on pole by just 0.0012 seconds but succeeded in securing a front row start. Shields was fifth, and only 0.0874 seconds away from the top, while Fitzsimmons earned himself ninth on the grid as part of the closest qualifying top 10 in series history.

Fitzsimmons gained five places in the opening race of the weekend, which was punctuated by lap one chaos. Shields was left with no choice but to take avoiding action which cost him some places, leading to a fightback to finish in sixth. Morris made a decisive opening lap overtake to take the race lead, from which he ran away to win the race.

Race two saw Morris largely untroubled as he controlled the race from the front, taking his second win of the weekend. Fitzsimmons made a fast start to sit in third for the majority of the race, before he made a spectacular final lap pass to claim second place and his best ever result. Shields fought his way forward to fourth, with his progress further up the order hindered by a late race Safety Car.

The final race saw Morris and Fitzsimmons battle it out for the race victory after a fast start from Fitzsimmons gave him the lead on the opening lap. Morris was able to reclaim the position and narrowly fended off Fitzsimmons to complete his weekend sweep. Shields settled in to third early on and held the spot for all but the final corner of the race, as he was boxed in and shuffled back to fifth.

Combined results see Morris claim the round win ahead of teammate Fitzsimmons. Shields finished fifth for the round and moved up to second overall in the Pro class standings with two rounds remaining. In the Endurance Cup standings, Fitzsimmons has also moved up to second after four top fives from four races.

Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge will tackle round five with a trip to The Bend Motorsport Park from October 13-15. TekworkX Motorsport will also be in action at The Bend this weekend, with Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup and Toyota 86.

Hamish Fitzsimmons
“I wanted to get a sprint race podium this weekend and we got that in race two, so I’m thrilled with what we achieved,” said Fitzsimmons.

“The field has stepped up even from round one, the racing is so competitive, but I feel I’ve improved as well and I can come through and make overtakes whereas early on I struggled a bit with that. We were consistently fast in every race as well which was great, and we had pace to burn. For next round we just need to look at improving our qualifying run and use that to aim for a win.

“We’re moving forward in each session and each weekend now, we’ve got great momentum to take into the next round,” concluded Fitzsimmons.

Aron Shields
“Overall I’m happy with how the weekend played out,” said Shields.

“We moved up to second in the championship, which was a big target to try and close in on that gap. Our car was super fast all weekend, but we just got caught In the wrong place at the wrong time a few times which cost us some track position. I’m stoked for the team as well, to get their best result with all three cars in the top five.

“We’ve got a little break before The Bend but I’m excited to get there, it was one of my best rounds last year,” concluded Shields.
