Carrera Cup and Toyota 86 Descend on The Bend

Aug 16, 2023

TekworkX Motorsport will tackle both Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup and Toyota 86 this weekend at The Bend Motorsport Park as part of the OTR SuperSprint.

Last time out in Carrera Cup, Max Vidau claimed two race wins and second for the round in Townsville as he vaulted himself back to third in the Pro standings. This weekend also makes one of two home rounds for the South Australian in the 2023 calendar.

“I’m really excited to get out there and keep our momentum going,” said Vidau.

“It’s always cool to race in front of family and friends, but also the familiarity with the track is a massive bonus. I’ve done laps in all sorts of cars around that track. In terms of technical driving, it’s probably an even harder lap than Bathurst. It’s such a hard lap to get 100 percent right.

“While our confidence is high after the last round and for the team with the run we’ve had in Sprint Challenge, it’s important for us to focus on putting in the hard work and not resting back at all,” concluded Vidau.

Maxwell also finds a level of familiarity in a track he qualified on the front row for in his 2019 season in Carrera Cup. The distinctive European nature of the circuit lends itself to the international start Maxwell had to his racing career.

“I really enjoy the track, the European style of circuit is what I have a lot of my experience at and so it suits me quite a bit,” said Maxwell.

“I feel like we’re getting the car into a really good window. In Townsville we had strong speed but just had a few mishaps along the way, and I didn’t quite get the most out of that weekend. I’m happy with how we’re progressing though, and the team is in a great spot at the moment, it’s a great environment to be in.

“The long lap means plenty of opportunities and the little things make a big difference. The commitment level is extremely high, and you need to really be prioritising your exits to set up for some of the long straights as well. There’s plenty of racing still to be had in this season, we’ve had a bit of bad luck but hopefully we can set ourselves up for a consistent back half of the year,” concluded Maxwell.

Pro-Am Danny Stuttered has progressed strongly over the first three rounds of the season, in his first full year of Carrera Cup. In Townsville, Stutterd claimed his first podium finish in class with a third place result in race three. This weekend marks the first time since the season opening Australian Grand Prix that Stutterd will race around a venue at which he has previously competed.

In Toyota 86, Ryan Hadden is coming off a strong weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park where he produced his career best qualifying performance to date.

“I’m pumped to tackle a new track, and one that is as fast and flowing as The Bend,” said Hadden.

“We went and did a test at the circuit the other week which was a huge benefit for me to get a head start on learning the track. In the Toyotas I think finding a draft is going to be a huge part of qualifying, the track is high speed with a number of flat out corners and long straights, so that tow should provide a big chunk of lap time.

“Heading into my third round with the team, being in that team environment has been massive in helping me to start improving upon myself. Looking through data with previous champions of the category and having that feedback from the Porsche drivers as well is so valuable,” concluded Hadden.

Zoe Woods is coming into the round off the back of her best ever weekend in Toyota 86 racing. Competing in the Scholarship Series round at Queensland Raceway, Woods earned her first career Toyota 86 top 10 and then top 5 in race three of the weekend after only narrowly missing out on the podium.

“I love the track at The Bend, it’s an amazing facility to go racing at,” said Woods.

“I’ve been there before in the Production Cars where I had my best weekend, and I also did some test laps in a Porsche at the start of the year around there. After the scholarship series round at QR I’m really looking forward to picking up where I left off with a lot more confidence within myself in the car.

“It was great to be up the top and also racing amongst everyone and fighting for spots. I am really looking forward to doing that at The Bend,” concluded Woods.

Round four for Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup, and round three for the Toyota 86 Series take place from August 18-20 at The Bend Motorsport Park.
