‘Great Spectacle’ Awaits in Carrera Cup and TGRA GR Cup

Jul 17, 2024 | Carrera Cup, General, Toyota 86

TekworkX Motorsport arrive at the Sydney SuperNight in Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup and TGRA GR Cup with a whirlwind of momentum following multi-category success in Townsville.

The event marks round four of the Carrera Cup season, where David Russell sits fourth in the Championship in the Hire A Hubby Porsche. The TekworkX driver bolstered his title credentials with a maiden round win in Taupō, before solidifying his place in the top five with a consistent weekend in Darwin last month.

Russell previously raced Carrera Cup at Sydney Motorsport Park in 2015, where he claimed two podium finishes and third overall for the round. Since then Russell has logged countless laps at the circuit, but this weekend will be his first under lights at the Eastern Creek Circuit.

“I’m very familiar with the track, done plenty of racing there and had some success in Carrera Cup which is always nice,” said Russell.

“We can take some confidence going in to the round, we’re working well together as a team. TekworkX have had a lot of success in 2024, and to have weekends like they did in Townsville is great for the whole crew. Everyone’s in really high spirits and I want to do the very best I can to keep it going.

“I haven’t had much experience at night there, but with the schedule we’ve got it’ll be straight out for the first time in race one so it should be a great spectacle. The Michelin tyre hangs on pretty well, but in comparison to Darwin the temperatures will be kept in check and that should lead to some pretty decent racing.

“It’s the midway points for the championship so it’s really important for us to keep going and ensure we’re in a position to keep collecting points,” concluded Russell.

After opening their season in Townsville, the team’s TGRA GR Cup trio are back for their second round in just three weeks. Bradi Owen leads the way after a scintillating breakout weekend, sweeping the maiden honours for the new generation of Toyota racing in Australia.

Owen leads the standings by 46 points thanks to his weekend sweep. 16-year-old Lincoln Taylor, who impressed with a top five performance in his first ever visit to a street circuit, will carry the confidence of another top five result in the Scholarship Series in Sydney last year as well as a pre-season test at the circuit. For Zoe Woods it’s a home event, after growing up in the Sydney area before moving to the Gold Coast where the TekworkX team are based.

The team will be in action from July 19-21 as part of the Sydney SuperNight, with live coverage on Fox Sports & Kayo.
