Russell Extends Podium Streak in Carrera Cup
TekworkX Motorsport have laid claim to their first end-of-season silverware in TGRA GR Cup, with Bradi Owen securing third in the championship. The weekend on the Gold Coast was further boosted by David Russell’s trio of podium finishes in Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup.
After qualifying was interrupted by a string of red flags and local yellows, the Toyota trio were left out of position on the grid for Race 1. Lincoln Taylor performed a superb fightback across the weekend, after qualifying in 30th the 16-year-old worked his way through the field to finish the final race of the season in fifth place.
Zoe Woods fought back from a mechanical issue in Race 1 to claw back up the order to finish her final race in the category in 23rd. Owen looked to set to follow up his top 10 performance in the opening race with another strong result in Race 2, before being taken out on the final lap. Owen was able drive from the back to a 19th place finish in the final race of the weekend, delivering a third-place result in the championship.
In Carrera Cup Russell was also hampered by a red flag in Qualifying, but was still able to produce a pair of strong laps that earned the Hire A Hubby Porsche fourth on the grid for Race 1 and third for Race 2.
A strong launch saw Russell immediately climb to third in the weekend’s opening race, which he comfortably held through to the chequered flag. Race 2 played out in similar fashion, picking up a spot off the line and holding second place all race long.
Starting from the front row for the final race of the weekend, Russell piled the pressure on for the race lead but the tight nature of the circuit proved a limiting factor with Russell settling for a sixth-consecutive podium in second place.
With one round to go in the season Russell sits second in the points standings, 91 points clear of third place.
The team are next in action for the final round of GT4 Australia at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International, from November 8-10.
Quotes:
Bradi Owen
“It was a pretty tough weekend, coming in as the championship leader, to be honest just didn’t get it right this weekend. Qualified average in 12th, and from there it just makes the weekend super difficult. We were able to move up a couple spots in Race 1 and then we got turned around in Race 2. It’s been a good year for me, regardless of this weekend, I’ve taken a lot out of it and I’m really looking forward to next year.”
David Russell
“A fantastic opportunity to race here, I love this track. We started off strong, but qualifying was a bit unlucky with the red flag. If we’d got that pole it would have changed our weekend. We had to work hard to make those positions which is hard around here. We came through the other side of it with a very clean car, which I can’t say for some of the others, which is really important.
“It was really important to make sure in that longer race that we didn’t get any kerb strike penalties, I worked really hard to keep a clean race. It put us in position to be on the front row to have a crack in that final race. We put plenty of pressure on there, but the opportunity didn’t present itself, Bayley drove a really good race.
“Really good points for us going into Adelaide, and looking forward to another street circuit that I really enjoy,” concluded Russell.
