Owen Looks to Secure TGRA GR Cup Title on the Gold Coast
Bradi Owen will look to close out the TGRA GR Cup title this weekend on the streets of the Gold Coast and earn TekworkX Motorsport their first championship.
Owen will be joined by Lincoln Taylor and Zoe Woods, while David Russell will line up in the team’s Hire A Hubby Porsche for the penultimate round of the Carrera Cup season. For the Gold Coast-based team and drivers, it’s also a highly anticipated home round.
The Toyota season began in Townsville, where Owen swept the weekend in spectacular fashion to set up his title charge. Owen has taken eight podiums from 12 races so far in 2024 and enters the final round of the season with a 26-point lead over second place, with a further 100 points to third.
“First time racing on the Gold Coast, a pretty cool opportunity for me. I’ve been to the event for years now as a spectator and being only 20 minutes from home it will be nice to be able to stay at home,” said Owen.
“The circuit is a lot tighter than Townsville, but I think the approach will be similar. I felt really comfortable in the car earlier in the year so to try and apply that same speed to the Gold Coast will be the goal.
“Ultimately, I would love to win the championship, really if I just do the best job I can do and maximise each session the results will come. I think nonetheless we have had a solid year and proven that we deserve to be there, so I am looking to finish the year and my time with TekworkX on a high,” concluded Owen.
Woods enters the weekend filled with confidence, following her breakthrough victory last weekend in GT4 Australia. Woods became the first female winner in the series’ history, and the first to earn an outright podium.
“For it to actually be happening and racing on the Gold Coast this weekend is quite exciting. Our preparation has really just been simulator focused, the category hasn’t raced there before so it will be new experience for everyone,” said Woods.
“I’ve done plenty of track walks there in previous years, and I’ve been riding my bike around the circuit while they’ve been setting up which has been cool. There will be some silly mistakes throughout the field, so just looking to stay out of trouble which we’ve done all year and pick up places in every race,” concluded Woods.
Taylor comes into the season finale off the back of his strongest weekend of Toyota racing to date. The 16-year-old spectacularly qualified on the front row in his first appearance at Mount Panorama, before sealing a sixth-place result for the round overall.
“It’s pretty special to be able to race at an event I’ve attended for many years growing up. Having such a good weekend at Bathurst showed me that I have the pace to run at the front, however we will go out for practice this weekend and see where we end up. The Gold Coast is definitely a tough track, but it will also be super fun as you’ll always be on edge,” said Taylor.
In Carrera Cup, Russell enters the weekend second in the points following a trio of podium finishes at Bathurst. The Hire A Hubby Porsche has sailed to three victories in 2024, and the Gold Coast has proven a happy hunting ground for Russell in previous Carrera Cup appearances.
“It’s a circuit that most people love going to, because it’s so exciting as a driver,” said Russell.
“Individually it’s easy enough to find the limit, but there’s some onus on the drivers around you in the races to stay out of trouble which poses the biggest risk. You have to have that exuberance but know when to use it and when not to.
“With the kerbs, and the bumps it’s well and truly a street fight and it’s cool to go back. Last time we were there, in 2022 and 2015, we were on the podium. I will just be focused on being as fast as I can be and try to be in front of any trouble,” concluded Russell.
The final round of the TGRA GR Cup season and the penultimate outing for Carrera Cup in 2024 gets underway from October 25-27 as part of the Gold Coast 500.
